No, the SVOP, SDV-BS (MED A3) and ROC-M do NOT expire. These certifications do NOT need to be renewed.

Who needs SVOP?

Requirements for Small Non-pleasure Vessels Vessels of 15 gross tonnage or less that carry more than 12 passengers; Vessels of more than 15 gross tonnage.

How do you get SVOP?

A minimum of 26 hours of training over four (4) days. If the course is combined with the Small Non-Pleasure Vessel basic Safety (MED A3) course, the duration is five (5) days. Must be at least 18 years of age for SVOP certificate to be valid.

How long is a marine medical good for?

What are the requirements for a captain’s license?

  • Must be at least 19 years old.
  • Must be able to document 720 days of experience on a vessel, of which at least 360 days must be on Near Coastal/Ocean waters. (
  • 90 days of sea service must be within the last 3 years of when you apply.

How long is a Canadian marine medical good for?

Successful applicants will be issued a certificate that is valid for 2 years declaring them fit to work offshore.

Is Indian CoC valid in Canada?

There is no automatic recognition of a foreign Certificate of Competency (CoC) in Canada. One has to apply and become a Permanent Resident (PR) in Canada under the Immigration Actfirst and then on arrival in Canada take the Immigration papers along with original records of sea service, etc.
